Ïé áðáíôÞóåéò ãéá üëåò áõôÝò ôéò åñùôÞóåéò âñßóêïíôáé...

Screw that! Óôçí ðñáãìáôéêüôçôá, ï Eddie Campbell äåí Ý÷åé êáìßá äéÜèåóç íá áðáíôÞóåé óå áõôÜ ôá "èåìåëéþäç åñùôÞìáôá". Ôï THE FATE OF THE ARTIST äåí ðñïóäïêåß íá ãßíåé ôï "ìïíôÝñíï ìáíéöÝóôï ôïõ øáãìÝíïõ cartoonist" êáé íá ôåêìçñéþóåé ôç ó÷Ýóç ôïõ äçìéïõñãïý ìå ôá äçìéïõñãßåò êáé ôç æùÞ. Áõôü ðïõ -ðñïöáíþò- öéëïäïîåß íá êÜíåé åßíáé, áðëÜ, íá ìáò äþóåé ôçí åõêáéñßá íá ìðïýìå ãéá ëßãï "óôï ìõáëü ôïõ Eddie Campbell", êáèþò ï ßäéïò åðáíáðñïóäéïñßæåé ôçí ðñïóùðéêÞ ôïõ ó÷Ýóç ìå ôçí ÔÝ÷íç êáé åðáíåîåôÜæåé ôç äçìüóéá åéêüíá ôïõ, üðùò ôçí áíôéëáìâÜíïíôáé ïé "áðëïß" (as in, "not artistically inclined") Üíèñùðïé. Ï Campbell äåí ðñïôßèåôáé íá ìéëÞóåé åî ïíüìáôé üëùí ôùí comics creators ôïõ ÐëáíÞôç. Åêðñïóùðåß ìüíï ôïí åáõôü ôïõ, áêüìç êáé üôáí áöÞíåé Üëëïõò íá ìéëÞóïõí ãéá áõôüí.

Óôï THE FATE OF THE ARTIST, ï Eddie Campbell ìáò ðáñïõóéÜæåé ôçí éóôïñßá ôçò åîáöÜíéóçò ôïõ êáé ôçò Ýñåõíáò ãéá ôçí áíáæÞôçóç ôïõ, ðïõ öõóéïëïãéêÜ áêïëïõèåß. Ï êáëëéôÝ÷íçò ("The Artist") Ý÷åé áðïöáóßóåé íá åãêáôáëåßøåé ôï óðßôé ôïõ, ìçí áöÞíïíôáò êáíÝíá ß÷íïò ó÷åôéêÜ ìå ôï ðïõ ðÞãå, äçìéïõñãþíôáò áìöéâïëßåò óôïõò ïéêåßïõò ôïõ ãéá ôï áí âñßóêåôáé áêüìç åí æùÞ. Ôï áí óõíÝâç ðñÜãìáôé êÜôé ôÝôïéï Þ ü÷é, äåí Ý÷åé êáìßá áðïëýôùò óçìáóßá. Ï Campbell åðéëÝãåé íá ôï ðáñïõóéÜóåé ùò "autobiographical fiction" êáé äßíåé ôï äéêü ôïõ "ñüëï" óå Ýíáí çèïðïéü, ï ïðïßïò äßíåé ìéá ðñáãìáôéêÜ åîáéñåôéêÞ åñìçíåßá óôï ñüëï ôïõ "frustrated and troubled artist". Óôïõò ôßôëïõò ôçò åéóáãùãÞò, ôï THE FATE OF THE ARTIST ðáñïõóéÜæåôáé ùò "an autobiographical novel in which the author does not appear as himself".

Ôá ðñïóùðéêÜ åßäç ôïõ Campbell ðåñíïýí áðü éáôñïäéêáóôéêïý åðéðÝäïõ Ýëåã÷ï, ìå óêïðü íá åíôïðéóôïýí áêüìç êáé ôá ðéï inadvertent clues ðïõ ìðïñåß íá Ý÷åé áöÞóåé ðßóù ôïõ, óå ìéá ðñïóðÜèåéá -çèåëçìÝíç Þ ü÷é- íá ôïí áíáêáëýøïõí. Ç Éóôïñßá ôùí comics õðüêåéôáé êáé áõôÞ óå åîïíõ÷éóôéêü Ýëåã÷ï, ìå ôç óõíå÷Þ ñïÞ áðü newspaper strips ðïõ èá ìðïñïýóáí íá áíÞêïõí óå äéÜöïñåò ÷ñïíéêÝò ðåñéüäïõò íá ìáò äßíåé glimpses áðü ôç æùÞ ôïõ Campbell êáé ôï interaction ìå ôçí ïéêïãÝíåéá êáé ôïõò ößëïõò ôïõ.

ÖõóéêÜ, áðü ìéá ôüóï "êáõôÞ" õðüèåóç äåí èá ìðïñïýóáí íá ëåßðïõí ïé áðáñáßôçôïé äçìïóéïãñÜöïé. Ç êüñç ôïõ Campbell, Hayley (ìå appropriate, slightly ìðëáæÝ, slightly "Ýîáëëï íéÜôï" look - ôï "dark eyes makeup" êáé ôï ìðëïõæÜêé "Joy Division" åßíáé dead giveaways ãéá íá êáôáëÜâïõìå ôé ðáéäß ìåãÜëùóå ï êáëëéôÝ÷íçò), ìéëÜåé óå Ýíáí áðü áõôïýò, äßíïíôáò ìå éäéáßôåñá ãëáöõñü ôñüðï êáé ÷ùñßò ß÷íïò ðñïóðÜèåéáò íá ùñáéïðïéÞóåé ôçí ðñáãìáôéêüôçôá, ìéá ðéï óáöÞ åéêüíá ôïõ ðïéïò Þôáí ï ðáôÝñáò ôçò êáé ðñïóðáèþíôáò (ü÷é ìå éäéáßôåñï æÞëï, åßíáé ç áëÞèåéá - kids these days...) íá åñìçíåýóåé êáé áõôÞ ôïõò ëüãïõò ôçò åîáöÜíéóçò ôïõ.

Öùôïãñáößá, comics, strips êáé ðñüæá (ìáæß ìå ðïéêßëïõò óõíäõáóìïýò üëùí áõôþí) ôßèåíôáé óôçí õðçñåóßá ôïõ êáëëéôÝ÷íç, ï ïðïßïò åßíáé áðïöáóéóìÝíïò íá áãíïÞóåé ôá ðñïêáôáóêåõáóìÝíá öïñìáëéóôéêÜ êáëïýðéá êáé íá ÷ñçóéìïðïéÞóåé üëá ôá ìÝóá ãéá íá äéçãçèåß ôçí éóôïñßá ðïõ èÝëåé, ìå ôïí ôñüðï ðïõ èÝëåé (Þ "ìå ôïí ôñüðï ðïõ ðñÝðåé" - óôçí ðñáãìáôéêüôçôá, áí ï êáëëéôÝ÷íçò îÝñåé ôé êÜíåé, áõôÜ ôá äýï õðïôßèåôáé ðùò ðñÝðåé íá åßíáé Ýíá êáé ôï áõôü).

Ï Campbell ÷ñçóéìïðïéåß ôéò äõíáôüôçôåò ðïõ, áðëü÷åñá, ôïõ ðñïóöÝñåé ôï ìÝóï ôùí comics, ãéá íá öôéÜîåé êÜôé ðïõ êáôïñèþíåé íá åßíáé "pure, 100% 9th Art", ðáñ' üëï ðïõ, áíÜ óôéãìÝò, áðÝ÷åé ðïëý áðü áõôü ðïõ óôï ìõáëü ôïõ ìÝóïõ áíáãíþóôç Ý÷åé êáôá÷ùñçèåß ùò "ôõðéêü comic". Óôéò óêçíÝò ðïõ ìéëÜ ç êüñç ôïõ óôï äçìïóéïãñÜöï, áéóèÜíåóáé ðùò ìéëÜåé óå óÝíá êáé ðùò ìðïñåßò ðñáãìáôéêÜ íá áêïýóåéò ôç öùíÞ ôçò - áõôÞ ôçí åðéôçäåõìÝíá "âáñéÜ" êáé áñãüñõèìç öùíÞ, ðïõ åðéóôñáôåýïõí óõ÷íÜ ïé êïðÝëåò óôçí åöçâåßá ãéá íá ìçí áêïýãïíôáé "óáí êïñéôóÜêéá". (as any idiot knows, ïé êïðÝëåò, üôáí âñßóêïíôáé óôçí åöçâåßá, êÜíïõí üôé ìðïñïýí ãéá íá ìïéÜæïõí ìåãáëýôåñåò êáé ìüëéò áñ÷ßóïõí íá ðëçóéÜæïõí ôá ôñéÜíôá, êÜíïõí áêñéâþò ôï áíôßèåôï - but I digress...)

Ôá early-to-mid 20th Century comic strips ðïõ Ý÷åé äçìéïõñãÞóåé ï Campbell ãéá áõôü ôï graphic novel åßíáé ôüóï Üñôéá, áðü üëåò ôéò áðüøåéò, ðïõ óõ÷íÜ ÷ñåéÜæåôáé íá Ýñèåé -ó÷åäüí óáí çëåêôñïóüê- ôï áíáðÜíôå÷á óýã÷ñïíï êáé åîü÷ùò "Campbell-centric" punchline, ãéá íá äéáëýóåé ôï "óýííåöï ôçò åîáðÜôçóçò" êáé íá óõíåéäçôïðïéÞóåé ï áíáãíþóôçò ðùò áõôü ðïõ äéáâÜæåé äåí áíÞêåé óå êéôñéíéóìÝíåò åöçìåñßäåò ôïõ 1930.

Áðü ðïëëÝò áðüøåéò, ôï THE FATE OF THE ARTIST åßíáé Ýíáò áøåãÜäéáóôá äïìçìÝíïò êáé óõíÜìá, êáëëéôå÷íéêÜ åðáñìÝíïò âéáóìüò ôùí áéóèÞóåùí. Ç åíáëëáãÝò áíÜìåóá óå óôéë, ôå÷íïôñïðßåò, óõíáéóèÞìáôá êáé åñåèßóìáôá åßíáé ôüóï óõ÷íÝò êáé ôüóï åêíåõñéóôéêÜ perfect-at-face-value, ðïõ ï áíáãíþóôçò (ôïõëÜ÷éóôïí, ï "áíáãíþóôçò" ðïõ ãñÜöåé áõôü ôï review) óõ÷íÜ áíôéäñÜ åãùéóôéêÜ, íéþèïíôáò õðï÷ñåùìÝíïò íá áíáæçôÞóåé ëÜèç, ðáñáëåßøåéò êáé áôÝëåéåò, ðáñ' üëï ðïõ åßíáé ðñïöáíÝò üôé ðïëåìÜåé ìéá, åî áñ÷Þò, ÷áìÝíç ìÜ÷ç.

Åßíáé öáíåñü ðùò ï Campbell äåí ìðïñåß íá åëðßæåé ðùò ôï óõãêåêñéìÝíï graphic novel èá Ý÷åé ôçí ßäéá åðéôõ÷ßá ìå ôç óõíåñãáóßá ôïõ ìå ôïí Alan Moore óôï FROM HELL. Åßíáé, åðßóçò, öáíåñü ðùò äåí ìðïñåß íá áðåõèõíèåß óôï ßäéï êïéíü ìå áõôü ðïõ ôïí ëÜôñåøå ãéá ôéò down-to-earth éóôïñßåò ìå ðñùôáãùíéóôÞ ôïí Alec (THE KING CANUTE CROWD, GRAFFITTI KITCHEN, etc.).

¼ðùò åßðá êáé ëßãï ðéï ðÜíù, üìùò, áõôÞ åßíáé ç éóôïñßá ðïõ ï Campbell ðñáãìáôéêÜ Þèåëå íá äéçãçèåß - ëéãüôåñï award-craving áðü ôï FROM HELL, ðåñéóóüôåñï "äýóêïëï" áðü ôá "Alec stories". Êáé åßíáé ðñïöáíÝò ðùò äåí ôïí íïéÜæåé óå ðïéïõò áðåõèýíåôáé.
